Gengar is the third and final stage of the Gastly line. Gastly evolves into Haunter at level 25, and Haunter becomes Gengar only when it is traded. Gengar is a dual Ghost and Poison type. Its ability since Generation VII is Cursed Body, which can disable a move that hits it; earlier games gave it Levitate. It stands 1.5 meters tall and weighs 40.5 kilograms.
Gastly, Haunter and Gengar were the only Ghost-type Pokémon among the original 151, which made Gengar the only fully evolved Ghost type of Generation I. Pokémon X and Y later gave it a Mega Evolution, Sword and Shield added a Gigantamax form, and Mega Gengar has since reached the card game as Mega Gengar ex.
Gengar's first English cards came in Fossil in 1999, two rares drawn by Keiji Kinebuchi, whose art returned in Legendary Collection in 2002. Gym Heroes and Gym Challenge followed in 2000 with Sabrina's Gengar cards illustrated by Ken Sugimori. Our catalog tracks 51 Gengar printings across 34 sets, and the WOTC era contributes the most of any era (10), just ahead of Sword & Shield (9).
Expedition Base Set, the first e-Card series expansion (2002), added a Holo Rare Gengar by Yukiko Baba. FireRed & LeafGreen's Gengar ex (2004), drawn by Mitsuhiro Arita, came from the EX-era set named after the Kanto remake games. Team Up's Gengar & Mimikyu GX (2019) paired it with Mimikyu as a Tag Team card, Fusion Strike's Gengar VMAX (2021) includes a Secret Rare printing, and Ascended Heroes (2026) gave it its only special illustration rare so far, Mega Gengar ex drawn by danciao. Its newest card in our catalog is the Perfect Order Gengar from March 2026.
5ban Graphics has the most Gengar credits in our catalog (9). Keiji Kinebuchi and Mitsuhiro Arita have three each; Arita's run covers FireRed & LeafGreen, Arceus (2009) and the regular Gengar & Mimikyu GX in Team Up.
Gengar's card history is spread wide rather than concentrated in one chase card. Its printings run from WOTC-era Fossil rares and the Gym-series Sabrina's Gengar cards through lowercase ex, Tag Team GX and VMAX to a special illustration rare, and nine of the ten eras in our catalog include at least one Gengar.
