Emolga generates electricity in the sacs on its cheeks, stores it in its winglike membrane flaps, and discharges it while gliding between trees to scare off bird Pokémon, which lets it gather plenty of food. It lives in treetops, sometimes in holes pecked out by Pikipek, and it is the only Pokémon with a base stat total of 428. It was first seen in an image on August 7, 2010, ahead of the Black and White release.
Emolga appeared in Emolga the Irresistible!, when a manipulative, lazy, and gluttonous but good-hearted female was caught by Iris. Elesa's Emolga was the second Pokémon she used in her Nimbasa Gym battle against Ash in Dazzling the Nimbasa Gym!, defeating his Palpitoad and Snivy before losing to Pikachu.
Emolga is based on a flying squirrel, likely the Japanese dwarf flying squirrel, with its patagial membrane styled as a cape and possible nods to gliding marsupials such as the sugar glider and feathertail glider, and it may also nod to Pikachu as an electric rodent introduced each generation, with its electric cheeks echoing rodents that store food in theirs. Its first card is a 2011 Emerging Powers common illustrated by Kouki Saitou, who also drew its McDonald's Collection 2012 card, and Legendary Treasures carried an Ultra Rare numbered RC23 by Atsuko Nishida. The XY era brought an Emolga EX Ultra Rare pair from the XY set illustrated by Ryo Ueda and Eske Yoshinob, and the Mega Evolution era's Chaos Rising added a common illustrated by Kazumasa Yasukuni.
