Crustle's shell resembles a cut-away block of sediment with visible strata, and its powerful legs let it carry heavy rocks across arid terrain, though it will not leave its shell on a rainy day. Crustle represents July in the Unova horoscope, and it and Dwebble have an Egg Group combination no other Pokémon shares.
Crustle is based on a hermit crab, though its shell looks more like a block of layered rock than a real shell, while also recalling the colorful shells some hermit crabs wear. In Pokémon Shuffle it is the only Pokémon that can take up to eight Raise Max Level Enhancements.
Crustle's first card was a 2011 Noble Victories Uncommon illustrated by Naoyo Kimura, followed by a Dark Explorers Uncommon from Ryo Ueda and a Boundaries Crossed Rare from Mitsuhiro Arita. Legendary Treasures added a further Uncommon, and Paradox Rift, Destined Rivals and Black Bolt each paired a standard printing with an Illustration Rare.
