Cobalion is a Legendary Pokémon and the oldest member and de facto leader of the Swords of Justice, a group with Terrakion, Virizion and Keldeo that legend says once challenged humans; it is said to have a heart of steel. Its Defense and Special Defense stats are the exact reverse of Virizion's, while their other stats match, and it is the only member of the quartet whose English name differs from the official romanization of its Japanese name, as well as having French and German names that differ from each other. Cobalion, Terrakion, and Virizion were all designed by Takao Unno.
Cobalion appeared in the film Kyurem VS. The Sword of Justice as one of its stars alongside Terrakion, Virizion, Kyurem, and Keldeo, and like the others it is able to speak through telepathy.
Cobalion is based on Athos from The Three Musketeers, matching his role as the oldest and de facto leader, with its body styled after ungulates like the markhor, stag, and greater kudu, and its nose shaped like that of a sheep or goat as with its fellow Swords of Justice. Its first set card is the 2011 Emerging Powers Rare by 5ban Graphics, who also drew both Noble Victories cards. Plasma Storm added a Cobalion-EX in Rare and Ultra Rare forms, Team Up gave it three Cobalion GX cards, and the Mega Evolution era's Chaos Rising added a Cobalion ex in both Double Rare and Ultra Rare forms.
