Nessa runs Hulbury Stadium in Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield (2019), the second Gym of the Galar Gym Challenge after Milo's in Turffield, and she specializes in Water-type Pokémon. The player first finds her by Hulbury's lighthouse before she heads back to her Gym. In the Gym battle she uses Goldeen and Arrokuda, then Dynamaxes her Drednaw, a Water and Rock type; all of her Pokémon are kept in Dive Balls. Beating her earns the Water Badge and TM36 (Whirlpool), and she turns up again in the first round of the Champion Cup Finals.
Her League Card fills in the rest. Her father is a fisher and her mother works in the marketplace, and she grew up around Water types. She met Sonia during their own Gym Challenge, the two are still close, and Nessa brings her fresh seafood from Hulbury. She has declared Milo her rival, though Milo says his only rival is himself. She is famous as a model as well as a Gym Leader, and she comes across so differently in each role that plenty of Galar fans assume they are two different people.
The animated series Pokémon: Twilight Wings gives Nessa her own episode, Early-Evening Waves. After losing a Champion Cup match to Milo, she is needled by Chairman Rose, who suggests her modeling is getting in the way of her Gym work. A photo shoot reunites her with a Feebas she befriended as a child, now a Milotic, and she decides to keep both careers.
In the mobile game Pokémon Masters EX she forms a sync pair with Drednaw, and her Holiday 2021 version is paired with Eiscue.
Nessa has one Trainer card, a Supporter simply named Nessa, that puts up to four Water Pokémon and Water Energy cards, in any combination, from the discard pile into the hand. It debuted in Vivid Voltage on November 13, 2020, printed three times in that set: an Uncommon (#157) illustrated by take, plus a full-art Ultra Rare (#183) and a Secret Rare (#196), both illustrated by Ryuta Fuse.
The card came back in the Lost Origin Trainer Gallery on September 9, 2022, as a full-art Ultra Rare (TG27) with new artwork by saino misaki, and again in Crown Zenith on January 20, 2023, as a Holo Rare (#136) illustrated by Souichirou Gunjima. All five printings carry the same effect, so choosing between them comes down to artwork and finish: the Ryuta Fuse full art and its Secret Rare counterpart, saino misaki's Trainer Gallery take, or the Crown Zenith holo.
