Morty is the fourth Gym Leader in Pokémon Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver. He leads the Ecruteak Gym with Ghost type Pokémon and awards the Fog Badge; the Gym itself is a dark pit crossed on an invisible floor. Known as the Mystic Seer of the Future, he follows the legends of Ecruteak and trains there in the hope of one day seeing Ho-Oh. In the Pokémon World Tournament of Black 2 and White 2 he always leads with Gengar.
In Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, the Gym cannot be challenged when the player first reaches Ecruteak City: Morty is at the Burned Tower with his friend Eusine, looking for signs of the Legendary beasts Suicune, Entei and Raikou, and he returns to the Gym only after the player has awakened them.
In the anime, Ash and his friends meet Morty at the Burned Tower, where he tells them the legend of Ho-Oh and Ecruteak's two towers but doubts Ash's claim to have seen Ho-Oh. His Gengar stops Team Rocket from making off with Pikachu and Togepi. After Ash beats him in their Gym battle, won with Noctowl's Confusion and Foresight, Morty says he now believes Ash may well have seen Ho-Oh, given the spirit he showed.
His card run opens in Lost Thunder (November 2, 2018) with an Uncommon Supporter (#186) illustrated by Ken Sugimori and an Ultra Rare full art version (#212) illustrated by Sanosuke Sakuma. Morty's Conviction followed more than five years later in Temporal Forces (March 22, 2024) as an Uncommon (#155) and an Ultra Rare (#201), both illustrated by GIDORA, plus a Special Illustration Rare (#211) with separate artwork by Megumi Mizutani.
Lost Thunder and Temporal Forces both give him the same Uncommon to Ultra Rare pattern, but Temporal Forces adds a third, higher step with the Special Illustration Rare, making his 2024 Supporter the wider of the two to collect in full. No artist repeats across the two releases: Sugimori and Sakuma drew the 2018 pair, GIDORA and Mizutani the 2024 trio.

Morty's Conviction in special illustration rare from Temporal Forces leads the most valuable Morty cards by 2.5 times over the next card. That runner-up is the Ultra Rare Morty from Lost Thunder, printed in 2018. Third is the Ultra Rare version of Morty's Conviction from Temporal Forces, and the Uncommon prints of Morty from Lost Thunder and Morty's Conviction from Temporal Forces fill out the rest.
