Lana captains the water trial at Brooklet Hill on Akala Island. She has the player investigate strange disturbances in the hill's waters while riding the Ride Pokémon Lapras, and the trial ends against a Totem Pokémon: a School Form Wishiwashi in Sun and Moon, an Araquanid in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. She also turns up at the end of Mallow's trial with Kiawe, bringing supplies needed to lure out Totem Lurantis.
Alola replaces Gyms with the island challenge, and captains like Lana run its trials. She is written as a Water type specialist devoted to her family and a dependable older sister to her twin sisters, Harper and Sarah. After the main story the player can visit the twins in Konikoni City, battle them, and then take on Lana herself at Brooklet Hill, where her Araquanid holds Waterium Z.
In Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon, Lana is one of Ash's classmates at the Pokémon School on Melemele Island, drawn to the sea and to fishing. Her partner is a Popplio she rescued from Team Skull Grunts; it spent 105 episodes as Popplio before evolving into Brionne and then Primarina. In one trial episode she hooks the Totem Wishiwashi on her fishing rod while Popplio keeps it busy.
Brionne evolves while saving Lana from a poisoned, furious Kyogre, and Primarina's song then calms the Legendary. It is the only Pokémon owned by one of Ash's classmates to use a Pokémon-specific Z-Move, Oceanic Operetta, which it fires in her Manalo Conference battles.
Lana first reached the card game as a Supporter named simply Lana in Burning Shadows (2017), with Ken Sugimori artwork, and that card was later printed again in Ultra Prism. Cosmic Eclipse (November 1, 2019) brought two more: the Tag Team Supporter Mallow & Lana, and Lana's Fishing Rod, an Item card printed as an Uncommon (#195) and a full art Secret Rare (#266), both illustrated by Eske Yoshinob. The same set's Wishiwashi (#240) is filed by Bulbapedia as a card of Lana's Pokémon.
Lana's Aid, a Supporter, followed in Twilight Masquerade (May 24, 2024) as an Uncommon (#155) and an Ultra Rare (#207), both illustrated by Atsushi Furusawa, plus a Special Illustration Rare (#219) with separate artwork by Toshinao Aoki. For collectors, the Twilight Masquerade Special Illustration Rare and the Cosmic Eclipse Secret Rare are the high rarity ends of her two named cards.
