The player first meets Colress in the Castelia Sewers, and in Castelia City he says he disagrees with the old Team Plasma's aim of separating Pokémon from people. On Route 4 he uses his machine to drive off a group of Crustle and then battles the player, he turns up again in the final of the Pokémon World Tournament, and on Route 22 he hands over the Colress Machine needed to clear the Crustle in Seaside Cave.
Aboard the Plasma Frigate at the Giant Chasm he admits he joined Team Plasma only to research the true strength of Pokémon, and Ghetsis reveals he made Colress the new boss. His team is built mostly on Steel types, with Klinklang as its highest-level member. After the Hall of Fame he stays on the docked frigate for rematches, and beating him there the first time earns a Master Ball.
In Pokémon Sun and Moon he turns up on Route 8, now convinced that a Pokémon's true power comes from its bond with its Trainer, and gives the player the Genesect Drives after they become Champion. Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon expand his role: he builds the N-Solarizer and N-Lunarizer for the Ultra Recon Squad, and in Episode RR he sends the defeated Team Rainbow Rocket bosses back to their own worlds, dispatching that world's Ghetsis simply because he opposes Ghetsis in every case.
In the Team Plasma arc of Pokémon the Series: Black & White, Colress runs a mind-control machine that seizes wild Pokémon, Iris's Dragonite and even Ash's Pikachu. The arc ends when Pikachu and Reshiram break free and destroy the device, and Looker arrests Colress with the rest of Team Plasma.
