Weepinbell is a pitcher-plant Pokémon with a yellow, bell-shaped body, three small green spots and a hook-shaped stem above its circular eyes, and a wide mouth with pink lips, evolving from Bellsprout at level 21 and into Victreebel with a Leaf Stone. It camouflages itself among forest plants and sprays poison powder to immobilize approaching prey before melting it with internal acids, oozing a neutralizing fluid to protect its own body, and using its razor-sharp leaves to slice up prey too large to consume whole. It hangs from tree branches by its stem to sleep, sometimes slipping and falling to the ground if it moves around too much.
Despite learning Leech Life through breeding, Weepinbell and its evolutionary relatives could not learn the move via TM until Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.
Weepinbell may be based on carnivorous pitcher plants, and its English name likely combines weeping and bell, while its Japanese name Utsudon may combine utsubokazura, the Japanese word for pitcher plant, with utsu, meaning depression or melancholy.
Weepinbell's earliest card was a 1999 Jungle Uncommon illustrated by Kagemaru Himeno, who also illustrated its Base Set 2 printing. Gym Heroes gave it two separate Erika's Weepinbell treatments illustrated by Atsuko Nishida and Ken Sugimori, and its Scarlet & Violet era printing is a 151 Common illustrated by Jerky. Miki Tanaka illustrated both its Aquapolis and Celestial Storm cards.
