Vanillish migrated to snowy southern mountains during an ancient ice age, expelling internally created ice to hide itself or freeze opponents, sparing their lives afterward because of its kind nature; its icy breath can reach temperatures near minus 148 degrees Fahrenheit. It was designed by James Turner, and alongside Vanillite it is one of only two Ice types consisting of just a head and a base.
Vanillish debuted in The Mighty Accelguard to the Rescue! under Dr. Ferrara, alias Cryogonal Man, losing to Charles's Accelgor, and Brycen later used a Vanillish in a Gym battle against Ash. A Vanillish and Vanilluxe searched for a missing Vanillite in Thawing an Icy Panic!, creating a snowstorm in Coumarine City.
Vanillish's first card was a 2011 Noble Victories Uncommon illustrated by match, followed by Next Destinies and Dark Explorers Uncommons. Plasma Storm and Plasma Freeze continued the run, and White Flare paired a Common with an Illustration Rare by Yoko Hishida in 2025.
