Trapinch is a Generation III Ground type whose powerful jaws can crush boulders as it digs through desert sand to build bowl or cone shaped nests that trap prey, waiting rather than actively hunting. It can go a week without food or water, and at night it burrows beneath the sand to sleep. It evolves into Vibrava at level 35 before reaching its final form, Flygon, at level 45.
Trapinch is the only member of its evolutionary line to have a Hidden Ability, and it has the highest base Attack stat of any Pokémon that evolves twice, higher than Vibrava's and equal to Flygon's, so evolving it in Pokémon GO lowers its CP. Trapinch also has the lowest base Speed stat of all Ground type Pokémon, and it and its evolved forms are the only Pokémon in the Bug and Dragon Egg Groups as of Generation VIII. It appears to be based on the larval stage of the antlion, which lives in sandy pits before maturing into a winged adult, and its head resembles a cartoonish foothold trap.
Trapinch debuted in 2003's Sandstorm, illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita, and the EX era gave it two delta species printings in Dragon Frontiers illustrated by Midori Harada and Yukiko Baba, alongside an earlier Holon Phantoms delta species card by Hajime Kusajima. The line continued through Cosmic Eclipse and into the Mega Evolution era with a 2025 Phantasmal Flames Common by Uta.
