Salamence is the last stage of the Bagon line: Bagon evolves into Shelgon at level 30, and Shelgon into Salamence at level 50. It is a Dragon and Flying type, stands 1.5 meters tall and weighs 102.6 kilograms. Its standard ability is Intimidate, and its hidden ability, Moxie, raises its Attack each time it knocks out an opponent.
In Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, and again in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Salamence is the highest-level Pokémon on the team of Drake, the Hoenn Elite Four's Dragon specialist. Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire introduced Mega Salamence, which keeps the Dragon and Flying typing.
Salamence made its physical anime debut in Vanity Affair as Drake's Pokémon, used against Team Rocket after they tried to steal Ash's Pikachu. In The Clumsy Crier Quiets the Chaos!, Team Rocket's attempt to capture a wild Salamence sent it on a rampage until Nurse Joy's Wigglytuff calmed it down.
Salamence arrived on cards in the 2003 Dragon set with two cards: a holo by Mitsuhiro Arita and a Rare by Kouki Saitou. Deoxys (2005) added the first Salamence ex. That year Delta Species printed Salamence δ as a Fire and Metal type, and Dragon Frontiers (2006) followed with a Water type Salamence ex δ, both illustrated by Ryo Ueda.
Arceus (2009) brought Salamence LV.X, and an XY Black Star Promo gave its Mega Evolution a card as M Salamence-EX. Dragon Majesty (2018) and Darkness Ablaze (2020) each have a secret rare, Salamence GX and Salamence VMAX. Journey Together (2025) paired a Double rare Salamence ex with a special illustration rare by Tsuyoshi Nagano. 5ban Graphics has illustrated eight Salamence cards.
