Luxray is the third and final stage of the Shinx line: Shinx becomes Luxio at level 15, and Luxio becomes Luxray at level 30. It is a pure Electric type standing 1.4 meters tall. Its standard abilities are Rivalry, which strengthens its moves against a target of the same gender and weakens them against the opposite gender, and Intimidate, which lowers an opposing Pokémon's Attack when Luxray enters battle. Its hidden ability is Guts.
Its Pokédex identity centers on its eyes, which are said to see through walls and other obstacles, the trait behind its Gleam Eyes category.
Luxray's first card is Diamond & Pearl #7, released in May 2007 and illustrated by Mikiko Takeda. Rising Rivals (2009), a Platinum series set, then printed Luxray GL and Luxray GL LV.X. GL cards are Pokémon SP classified as a Gym Leader's Pokémon, and each carries an icon of its Gym Leader in the corner of the artwork: for Luxray, that is Sunyshore's Volkner. Kouki Saitou drew Volkner's GL Pokémon, including Luxray GL #9, while Mitsuhiro Arita drew the LV.X.
Celebrations (2021) brought the Luxray GL LV.X back in its Classic Collection, reproducing the original Arita card, which gives collectors a modern way into that Platinum era design.
BREAKpoint (2016) added Luxray BREAK. A Pokémon BREAK is played sideways over its previous stage and keeps that card's attacks, Abilities, Weakness, Resistance and Retreat Cost, adding its own attack or Ability and a new HP total. Every BREAK card uses the same gold CGI treatment, which makes them easy to spot in a binder.
Astral Radiance (2022) printed Luxray V, including an Ultra Rare full art at #168, and Twilight Masquerade (2024) gave it Luxray ex as a Double rare and an Ultra Rare, both illustrated by PLANETA Yamashita. Paldean Fates (2024) added a Shiny rare Luxray drawn by kantaro.
Luxray's appeal is breadth rather than one headline card. A Luxray run touches most of the special card mechanics since Diamond & Pearl: Gym Leader SP cards tied to Volkner (including a LV.X), a BREAK, a V, an ex and a Shiny rare. Mitsuhiro Arita is credited on three Luxray printings, including the Legends Awakened holo.
