Gligar looks like a purple bat crossed with a scorpion, with pincer hands, blue wing membranes stretched between its arms and a tail ending in a stinger that is smaller on females. The anime episode Riding the Winds of Change! shows it gliding, eating Berries and steering around obstacles with sound waves.
Gligar evolves into Gliscor when leveled up at night while holding a Razor Fang, mirroring how its counterpart Sneasel evolves into Weavile with a Razor Claw. Bulbapedia notes Gligar and Sneasel share the same base stat total, both are Shadow Pokémon in Pokémon Colosseum and both turn up in The Under Subway, and both evolve into Pokémon introduced in Generation IV. Prior to Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, Gligar was sometimes depicted with white claws on its wings and legs instead of purple, and though it could not learn Earthquake by TM in Generation II, a Gligar that knew the move was a reward in Pokémon Stadium 2. Its design blends bats and scorpions and may also draw on gargoyles, which would fit its Ground typing, and its name likely mixes glide with hugger or gargoyle.
Gligar debuted in Neo Genesis illustrated by Hironobu Yoshida, and Dragon Frontiers later gave it a delta species treatment illustrated by Kagemaru Himeno. Legends Awakened printed two different Gligar, one by Masakazu Fukuda and one by Kouki Saitou, and Ken Sugimori drew it again for Unbroken Bonds. It has stayed a Common through nearly every era since, including Boundaries Crossed by Atsuko Nishida and Phantasmal Flames, a Mega Evolution era set, by Kazumasa Yasukuni.
