Gimmighoul is a small, blue-gray, metallic Pokémon with gold circular eyes and antennae tipped with small gold circles that vibrate and point toward objects it finds notable. It comes in nearly identical Chest and Roaming Forms differing mainly in habits and personality, and it evolves into Gholdengo once it gathers 999 Gimmighoul Coins. It is heavily associated with the number 999, down to its national Pokédex number, and it is the only Pokémon whose evolution requires TM Materials.
Gimmighoul may be based on the ghoul of Arabic folklore, known for luring victims to deserted places and stealing coins, with its antennae and tail resembling dowsing rods used to locate treasure.
Chest Form Gimmighoul debuted controlling Roy into collecting coins, later stowing away and being caught by Dot, who saw it evolve into Gholdengo. Paldean Fates added a common by OKUBO, Surging Sparks one by Scav, and the Mega Evolution era's Mega Evolution set a common by Takeshi Nakamura.
