Deino is the Irate Pokémon, a small blue four-legged dragon whose head is hidden under black fur except for its mouth. It cannot see, so it learns what is around it by crashing into and biting things, and in its water-rich but food-poor caves it will eat anything that moves.
Deino evolves into Zweilous at level 50, then into Hydreigon at level 64, the highest level of any Pokémon that evolves purely through leveling to its final form. Deino and Zweilous are the only Pokémon whose sole Ability is Hustle, and Deino's English name is the only one whose letters run in alphabetical order.
According to interviews with Ken Sugimori, Deino and its evolutionary line were originally intended to have tank-like aspects. They were shelved until late in development, when they were revived and remade to be based on the Yamata no Orochi legend, and Deino itself may draw on a cave salamander given its blindness and watery cave habitat.
Three Deino appeared in The Lonely Deino under the care of Bobby, who was looking after them for their trainers. Two were rambunctious while the third was shy and refused to eat, prompting Iris to draw on her Dragon type experience to help it feel comfortable around strangers.
Deino's earliest card is the 2011 Noble Victories Common illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita, followed by paired Commons in Dragons Exalted from kawayoo and Kouki Saitou, and again in Plasma Freeze from Midori Harada and Naoki Saito.
The 2025 White Flare set added a Common by kodama and an Illustration rare by Teeziro.
