Claydol evolves from Baltoy at level 36. It stands 1.5 meters tall, weighs 108 kilograms and has a single ability, Levitate, which makes it immune to Ground-type moves even though it is part Ground itself. No other Pokémon shares the Ground and Psychic combination of Baltoy and Claydol. In the Sinnoh games, Claydol is the main Pokémon of Buck, the trainer who joins the player at Stark Mountain in the events leading to Heatran.
Pokédex entries describe it as an ancient clay figurine, some 20,000 years old, that came to life. Its design appears to draw on the Shakōki-dogū, a goggle-eyed Jōmon period clay figure often called a spaceman statue, and its Japanese name, Nendoll, likely blends the words for telekinesis and clay with doll.
Claydol debuted in the anime in Claydol Big and Tall, where a giant Claydol freed from an enormous stone Poké Ball near Izabe Lake has to be stopped before it reaches a village. In the Diamond and Pearl series, a Claydol guarding treasure on Dandelion Island holds off Dawn's Piplup and Ash's Torterra before Buck catches it, and in the Pokémon Generations short The Magma Stone, Buck's Claydol battles a rampaging Heatran at Stark Mountain.
Claydol's first cards came in Team Magma vs Team Aqua in March 2004: a holo rare and an Uncommon, both named Team Magma's Claydol and illustrated by Zu-Ka. Plain Claydol followed in Hidden Legends later that year, with a holo by Kyoko Umemoto, then in Deoxys and Emerald in 2005. Power Keepers, the final main expansion of the EX series, printed Claydol ex in 2007, drawn by Ryo Ueda.
Midori Harada's Claydol from Great Encounters (2008) was reprinted with the same art in the Classic Collection of Celebrations (2021), the 25th anniversary set.
