Chinchou is the Angler Pokémon, a dual Water and Electric type introduced in Generation II that evolves into Lanturn at level 27. Its standard abilities are Volt Absorb and Illuminate, with Water Absorb as a hidden ability.
Chinchou first appeared in the Pikachu short "Pikachu & Pichu" as one of the Pokémon living in Big Town. In the main series, "Takin' It on the Chinchou" built an episode around the Parade of the Chinchou, a celebration of newly hatched Chinchou migrating from the mountains to the sea.
In "The Perfect Match!," Trinity's Chinchou beat Misty's Corsola during the Whirl Cup with Confuse Ray and Water Gun. Much later, in the Pokémon Journeys episode "Octo-Gridlock at the Gym!," Goh caught a Chinchou in Cianwood City.
Chinchou's first card is Neo Genesis #55, a 2000 Common illustrated by Ken Sugimori, followed by a Neo Revelation card in 2001. Our catalog lists 27 Chinchou printings across 23 sets over nine eras; 26 are Commons and the other carries no rarity. The EX era has the most, six.
The printing with the most character is Team Aqua's Chinchou from Team Magma vs Team Aqua (2004), which ties it to the villainous team of Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire. Aquapolis (2003) and Legends Awakened (2008) each printed two different Chinchou cards in the same set, and the Scarlet & Violet era added a new Common in Stellar Crown (2024).
