Chansey

Chansey in the games: the middle stage between Happiny and Blissey

Chansey is the Egg Pokémon, a Normal type whose Natural Cure ability heals its status conditions when it switches out and whose Serene Grace doubles the chance of its moves' secondary effects. Its hidden ability, Healer, can cure an ally's status condition each turn. Happiny evolves into Chansey by leveling up during the day while holding an Oval Stone, and Chansey evolves into Blissey once its friendship grows high enough.

Chansey also works inside Pokémon Centers in the games: in Pokémon Yellow and in Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, Chansey appear in the Centers themselves.

Chansey on cards: a Base Set holo, Chansey ex and an illustration rare

Chansey's first card is Base Set #3 from January 1999, a holo Rare illustrated by Ken Sugimori, whose art returned in Base Set 2 in 2000 and again on the Evolutions card in 2016. Our catalog lists 25 Chansey printings across 23 sets spanning nine eras. Ruby & Sapphire added Chansey ex in 2003, using the lowercase ex mechanic of the EX era.

Twilight Masquerade (2024) printed both a Common Chansey and an illustration rare by Toshinao Aoki. Chansey has also appeared outside the main sets, including a McDonald's Collection 2018 promo illustrated by Megumi Mizutani.

Chansey in the anime: Nurse Joy's constant companion

Chansey is the Pokémon Nurse Joy keeps at her side. The Nurse Joys of Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh and the Orange Islands mainly rely on Chansey to treat Pokémon at their Pokémon Centers, a role that goes back to the anime's second episode, Pokémon Emergency!. That job, more than any battle, defines Chansey in the anime.
