Carnivine has no evolutionary relatives. A greedy, short-tempered hunter, it dangles from branches by its vines and lures insects into its wide-open jaws with sweet-smelling drool, then spends a whole day eating what it catches. Carnivine is the only Pokémon with the Levitate ability that is resistant to the Ground type without the ability itself, and it is based on a Venus flytrap.
In Pokémon Battle Revolution, Toxic is depicted as two purple orbs spinning around each other toward the target, but when Carnivine uses the move, the orbs travel erratically, an animation it shares with Spinda. Carnivine also shares its name, possibly by coincidence, with a monster from the Dragon Quest series.
Carnivine's first set card was a 2007 Diamond & Pearl Rare illustrated by Kouki Saitou. POP Series 8 and Platinum added further Uncommon and Common printings, and the line continued through Unleashed, Triumphant, Dark Explorers, and Legendary Treasures. Shining Legends and Ultra Prism continued into the Sun & Moon era, Darkness Ablaze and Battle Styles added Uncommons, Crown Zenith gave it an Uncommon in 2023, and it reached the Mega Evolution era with a Common in Chaos Rising illustrated by Heisuke Kitazawa.
