Wording change

The original Plasma Freeze wording required discarding exactly 2 cards to retrieve exactly 4 Basic Energy cards, and specified the player could not play the card if unable to discard 2 cards. Paldea Evolved reworded this to discarding 2 other cards as a cost, and retrieving up to 4 Basic Energy cards rather than a fixed amount.

Printing history

Superior Energy Retrieval debuted in the Black & White era's Plasma Freeze as an Uncommon illustrated by 5ban Graphics, released 2013-05-08. It returned in the Scarlet & Violet era's Paldea Evolved in 2023 as both a Regular Uncommon and a Hyper Rare, both illustrated by Studio Bora Inc., giving the card three total printings across two eras.
