Energy Search lets a player fetch a basic Energy card straight from the deck into hand. Expedition Base Set added a clause to show the card to your opponent, Black and White changed that to revealing it, and Scarlet and Violet capitalized Basic Energy.
Energy Search debuted in Fossil in 1999 with art by Keiji Kinebuchi. Kai Ishikawa illustrated it from Expedition Base Set through the EX and Diamond and Pearl eras, and Ryo Ueda handled the Majestic Dawn and Black and White era printings. It has since returned in Sword and Shield, Scarlet and Violet, and the Mega Evolution era's Perfect Order set. Its trainer kit appearances include the EX trainer Kits for Latias and Latios, EX trainer Kit 2 for Minun and Plusle, the DP trainer Kits for Lucario and Manaphy, and the BW trainer Kits for Excadrill and Zoroark. The Fossil print was also included in the Pokémon Trading Card Game and Pokémon Trading Card Game 2: The Invasion of Team GR! for Game Boy Color.
Even though the Expedition Base Set printing reworded the card text by adding a new clause, no reference card was required when using the older Fossil printing. Kai Ishikawa drew 11 of its 21 catalogued printings, from Expedition Base Set through the Diamond and Pearl era trainer kits, the most of any illustrator.
