Tangrowth evolves from Tangela when leveled up while knowing the move Ancient Power; the species is absent from Pokémon Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, so Tangela cannot evolve there. Until Pokémon Platinum, the only way to get a Tangrowth was to bring a Tangela over through Pal Park and evolve it, the only case of a Generation IV Pokémon obtainable solely through Pal Park. A lost vine arm simply grows back, and it hunts by posing as a shrub until prey comes within reach of its vines, though it eats fruit as well.
Tangrowth appeared in the animated series in Promoting Healthy Tangrowth!, where it tried to save a dying tree that anchored its forest; with help from Ash and his friends, the tree was saved. In Zoroark: Master of Illusions, Tammy's Tangrowth helps her run a flower shop and later works alongside Joe's Mightyena to stop Zorua from escaping.
Tangrowth's tangle of vines concealing a hidden body may draw on Theodore Sturgeon's swamp-monster story It! and on the Green Man leaf motif, which may also explain the green color of its Shiny variant. Its earliest card is the 2008 Great Encounters Rare Holo illustrated by Kent Kanetsuna, and the Arceus set added a Tangrowth LV.X illustrated by Ryo Ueda. More recent prints include a Twilight Masquerade common by LINNE and an Uncommon illustrated by REND in the Mega Evolution set.
