Shelmet is a bivalve or snail-like Pokémon with a gray, visor-shaped shell that closes as a defensive tactic while it spits poisonous sticky fluid. Its natural predator, Karrablast, can force the shell open, and the two evolve around the same time through what appears to be electrical energy when traded with each other. Shelmet and Karrablast are the only Pokémon pair that must be traded specifically with each other to evolve, and although Escavalier gains a Steel type from the same armor, Shelmet stays a pure Bug type.
Shelmet debuted in Enter Elesa, Electrifying Gym Leader!, under Bianca's ownership, where it was quickly defeated by Elesa's Zebstrika in her Gym battle. It reappeared in Evolution Exchange Excitement!, where Bianca traded it to Professor Juniper for her Karrablast, triggering both Pokémon to evolve.
Shelmet's first card, a 2011 Noble Victories Common by Midori Harada, was followed by Common prints in Dark Explorers, Plasma Blast, Furious Fists, and Crimson Invasion. Darkness Ablaze and Fusion Strike continued the Common run, and the Scarlet and Violet era's Journey Together and White Flare added further Commons, the latter paired with an Illustration rare by Mekayu.
