Nidoran♀ is a female-only, pure Poison type with toxic spines on its back and a small forehead horn that secretes potent poison, though it only uses it when threatened. Its nose is keener than Nidoran♂'s, and its whiskers help it read the wind. It evolves into Nidorina at level 16, which evolves into Nidoqueen with a Moon Stone. Nidoran♀ lives in open spaces such as savannas and plains, and it can use its incisor teeth to crush the berries it forages for.
Alongside Nidoran♂, Nidoran♀ was the first Pokémon to feature any indication of gender, predating gender as a general game mechanic introduced in Generation II. It is also the only Pokémon that loses the ability to breed upon evolving. Its design draws on lagomorphs and rodents with venomous mammal traits, and possibly the mythical Moon rabbit given its Moon Stone evolution.
In Wherefore Art Thou, Pokémon?, Emily's Nidoran♀, nicknamed Maria, evolved into a Nidorina after kissing Ralph's Nidoran♂ following a battle with Team Rocket. In Leading a Stray!, multiple Nidoran♀ assisted a Luxio in rescuing a Wailmer trapped in the sewers.
Nidoran♀ was introduced in the WOTC era across Jungle, Base Set 2, Gym Challenge, Legendary Collection, and two Skyridge printings, followed by a delta species card in Dragon Frontiers during the EX era.
The Diamond & Pearl era carried Mysterious Treasures and Rising Rivals commons and the HeartGold & SoulSilver era a Triumphant common by sui, and the Black & White and XY eras continued with Plasma Freeze and Primal Clash commons.
