Bayleef evolves from Chikorita at level 16 and into Meganium at level 32. The rolled leaves ringing its neck hide a tiny tree shoot whose spicy scent energizes and heals. Its name comes from bay leaf, a pungent cooking herb, though the games always call its scent spicy while real bay leaves taste bitter and herbal. Bayleef appears to be based on sauropods, specifically Apatosaurus, with its vegetable elements drawn from the bay laurel, whose oil is used in aromatherapy.
Bayleef and its evolutionary relatives are the only evolutionary line of a first partner Pokémon to keep their Japanese voices in the English dub of the animated series, due to having nearly identical names in English and Japanese. Bayleef is also one of the few Pokémon with the same front sprite in both Pokémon Gold and Silver, and in the Spaceworld '97 demo its slot held a different, mole-based design named Hanamogura.
Bayleef's first cards appeared in the 2000 Neo Genesis set, both illustrated by Ken Sugimori, followed by an Expedition Base Set printing by Mitsuhiro Arita. Unseen Forces added an Uncommon, and Dragon Frontiers contributed a delta species version illustrated by Kagemaru Himeno. Mysterious Treasures added an Uncommon by Midori Harada, Shin Nagasawa drew both the HeartGold SoulSilver and Call of Legends cards, and BREAKpoint (Mizue) and Lost Thunder (Kagemaru Himeno) followed in the XY and Sun & Moon eras. The Mega Evolution era gave Bayleef both a Common in Mega Evolution and an Uncommon in Ascended Heroes.
