Raikou is a Legendary Electric type introduced in Pokémon Gold and Silver, 1.9 meters tall and 178.0 kilograms, with no evolutions. Its ability, Pressure, makes opponents spend extra PP on moves aimed at it, and its hidden ability, Inner Focus, prevents flinching.
The games tell the origin of the Legendary beasts. About 150 years before Gold and Silver, lightning struck Ecruteak City's Brass Tower and it burned down. Three Pokémon died in the fire, and Ho-Oh revived them as Raikou, Entei and Suicune. The trio are said to embody the lightning, fire and rain of that night, with Raikou as the lightning. The ruin became the Burned Tower, where the player finds the beasts in its basement before Raikou and Entei flee to roam Johto. The Pokémon Generations episode The Reawakening retells the same story.
Raikou's first cards came in Neo Revelation (2001): holo #13 by Ken Sugimori and a non-holo #22 by Naoyo Kimura. Skyridge (2003) followed with Holo Rare H26 by Mitsuhiro Arita. In the EX era Ryo Ueda drew both Raikou ex in Team Magma vs Team Aqua (2004) and Rocket's Raikou ex in Deoxys (2005).
Unseen Forces (2005) printed Raikou ☆ (#114), a Gold Star card by Masakazu Fukuda. Pokémon ☆ cards ran from EX Team Rocket Returns (2004) into 2007, show the Pokémon in its Shiny colors with part of it breaking out of the artwork frame, carry a gold star rarity mark, and were notoriously hard to pull.
Unleashed (2010) included Raikou in two Pokémon LEGEND pairings, a HeartGold & SoulSilver era card type split into a top and bottom half that are played together as one Pokémon, with artwork that joins into a single scene. Entei & Raikou LEGEND (#90 and #91) was drawn by Shinji Higuchi and Sachiko Eba, and Raikou & Suicune LEGEND (#92 and #93) by Shinji Higuchi and Noriko Takaya.
Call of Legends (2011) gave Raikou a Shiny Legends card (SL9) by Noriko Hotta, and Dark Explorers (2012) printed Raikou-EX. Later highlights include an Amazing Rare in Vivid Voltage (2020) and Raikou V in Brilliant Stars (2022). The Mega Evolution set (2025) brought a Rare Raikou by Takumi Wada.
