Magcargo evolves from Slugma at level 38 and adds the Rock type to Slugma's pure Fire typing. Its body is mostly magma, and the shell on its back is cooled, hardened magma so brittle it can crumble at a touch; Magcargo rebuilds it by bathing in magma. Pokédex entries put its body temperature above 10,000 °C, hot enough to boil away water that touches it.
Its standard abilities are Magma Armor, which prevents freezing, and Flame Body, which can burn attackers that make contact; its hidden ability, Weak Armor, lowers its Defense but raises its Speed when a physical move hits it. It stands 0.8 meters tall and weighs 55 kilograms.
Magcargo's first card is Neo Revelation #33 from 2001, an Uncommon illustrated by Shin-ichi Yoshida. Neo Destiny then printed Dark Magcargo, one of that set's Dark Pokémon, and Team Rocket Returns revisited the idea with another Dark Magcargo in 2004. Skyridge carried two different Magcargo artworks, by Hajime Kusajima and Mitsuhiro Arita, each as a regular Rare and as an H-numbered holo. Dragon added Magcargo ex in 2003, the EX era's lowercase ex.
Lost Thunder printed Magcargo GX three ways in 2018: the regular GX (#44), a full art (#198) and a Rainbow Rare (#218) numbered past the set's 214 cards. Twilight Masquerade returned it to the ex mechanic in 2024 as a Tera Magcargo ex, with an ultra rare version numbered above the set total. Destined Rivals then gave it a Trainer's Pokémon card as Ethan's Magcargo, named for the player character of Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal and their HeartGold and SoulSilver remakes. Mitsuhiro Arita holds four Magcargo credits, the most of any artist in our catalog.
