Articuno is an Ice and Flying type Legendary Pokémon from the original Kanto games, one of three Legendary birds alongside Zapdos and Moltres. Its Pokédex category is the Freeze Pokémon, and it does not evolve. It stands 1.7 meters tall and weighs 55.4 kilograms.
Its standard ability is Pressure, which makes opponents spend extra PP on moves used against it, and its hidden ability is Snow Cloak, which raises its evasion in hail or snow. Pokémon Sword and Shield introduced Galarian Articuno, a Psychic and Flying type.
Articuno's first card is Fossil #2 (1999), a holo rare illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita. Its first Wizards Black Star Promo came later, handed out with the July 2000 theatrical release of The Power of One. The EX era printed Articuno ex twice in 2004: as a Secret Rare in FireRed & LeafGreen, numbered 114 in a 112-card set, and as Rocket's Articuno ex in Team Rocket Returns. Plasma Storm (2013) added Articuno-EX, and Celestial Storm (2018) Articuno-GX, with a rainbow Secret Rare version.
Hidden Fates (2019) put all three Legendary birds on the tag team Moltres & Zapdos & Articuno-GX and printed a shiny Articuno-GX in its Shiny Vault. Chilling Reign (2021) introduced Galarian Articuno V, and Brilliant Stars (2022) added a Secret Rare version. In 2025, Journey Together printed an Illustration rare of the original Articuno and Destined Rivals added Team Rocket's Articuno, illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita.
5ban Graphics has the most Articuno credits in our catalog (10), ahead of Mitsuhiro Arita (6) and Ryo Ueda (4).
Articuno's card history runs in parallel with Zapdos and Moltres: Fossil printed all three as holos in 1999, FireRed & LeafGreen gave each a Secret Rare ex in 2004, and Hidden Fates put them on one tag team card. Sun & Moon and Sword & Shield printed Articuno most often, ten cards each, ahead of the Wizards of the Coast era's seven.
