Variants define the Expedition Base Set master set more than the card list does. The set has 165 cards, yet the master set takes 344 slots, about 2.1 slots per card, because reverse holos sit alongside the standard prints. Reverse holos account for 168 slots, normal prints for 144 and holos for 32. Laid out nine to a side, the full run fills 20 double-sided binder pages. It is a sizeable job for a WOTC era expansion released on September 15, 2002 in the English-language Pokémon TCG.
The largest family in the Expedition Base Set master set is Reverse Holo at 165 slots, followed by Normal at 133 and Holo at 32. Reverse holos appear across Common, Uncommon, Rare and Holo Rare cards, so nearly every card in the checklist gains a second slot. A reverse holo is a standard card with the holographic foil moved to the surrounding frame rather than the art. The remaining slots are small special families: Normal prints credited to Chris Fulop, Reed Weichler and Kevin Nguyen, Reverse Holo Jumbo cards and Normal prints with a Japanese back.
| Variant family | Slots | Priced | Share of value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reverse Holo | 165 | 159 | 60% |
| Normal | 133 | 133 | 13% |
| Holo | 32 | 32 | 27% |
| Normal Chris Fulop | 3 | 3 | <1% |

| Reverse Holo Jumbo | 3 | 0 | — |
| Normal Japanese Back | 2 | 0 | — |
| Normal Kevin Nguyen | 1 | 1 | <1% |
| Normal Takashi Yoneda | 1 | 1 | <1% |
| Normal Tsuguyoshi Yamato | 1 | 1 | <1% |
As of October 24, 2026, 333 of the 344 slots carry a price. Value sits heavily in the reverse holo finish at 59 percent of the master set total, ahead of holos at 28 percent and normal prints at 13 percent. The ten most valuable slots hold 25 percent, so the top is less concentrated than in many sets. The lower-value half of priced slots holds only 8 percent between them. Condition matters too: the Lightly Played and up total sits 24 percent below the Near Mint total, and the Moderately Played and up total sits 37 percent below it.

The hardest slots in the Expedition Base Set master set lead with the Dragonite holo, followed by the Charizard holo, and the Gengar holo ranks 4th. Between them sit two variant slots: the Dragonite reverse holo in 3rd place and the Mewtwo reverse holo in 5th. Every one of these is a Holo Rare. The Dragonite reverse holo is a variant rather than the card's main print, and it outranks the Gengar holo. Together these five slots hold 15 percent of the master set's total value.
At 344 slots, the Expedition Base Set master set is about 1.5 times the WOTC era median of 226 slots. By master set value it ranks 4th among the 16 comparable sets of its era. Its neighbours bracket it in size: Legendary Collection comes to 225 slots and holds a lower-value master set, while Aquapolis, at 349 slots, holds a higher-value one. Expedition is therefore a larger undertaking than the set before it and close in slot count to the one after, though Aquapolis carries more total value.

A Expedition Base Set master set is one copy of every card AND every variant in the set — the 165 cards on this page, with their Normal, Reverse Holo and Holo prints each listed and priced on their own. Sign in and the checklist tracks what you own, in step with the Cardboard Alpha app.
The large NM-only figure is a complete catalog estimate when every printing has current NM pricing. LP, MP, HP, and DMG “and up” totals below it use the requested condition or a better available condition. These are summed reference prices, not a quote from one seller; a dash means the current market does not cover every printing yet.
“LP and up” means lightly played or better: the total uses LP when available, then NM as the better-condition fallback. The MP, HP, and DMG tiers follow the same pattern.
