Umbreon GX and Espeon GX headline Sun & Moon, the expansion that opened the Sun & Moon era of the English-language Pokémon TCG. The release date was February 3, 2017, under set code SUM. It lists 149 official cards, with 23 secret cards numbered beyond that count, for 172 printings in the catalog. Espeon GX, Gumshoos GX, Lapras GX, Lunala GX and Lurantis GX each appear three times across different rarities. The set leans on Water, Grass, Colorless and Psychic Pokémon, and it is the base set that introduced the GX card style to the era's collectors.
The pull ladder runs from commons and uncommons through rares to 37 chase-tier cards, made up of Ultra Rares and Secret Rares, with the secret cards numbered past the printed 149. Umbreon GX in Secret Rare leads the most valuable cards, followed by an Umbreon GX Ultra Rare, the Secret Rare Espeon GX and the Ultra Rare Lillie. Most of the top cards are illustrated by 5ban Graphics, the set's busiest artist, while Megumi Mizutani is credited on Lillie. The top five cards alone hold 48 percent of the set's total card value.

A full run of Sun & Moon means 172 printings, and all 172 are priced. Because the top five cards carry 48 percent of the set's total card value, the cost of a complete set is driven by a few Umbreon, Espeon and Lillie cards rather than by the 53 commons and 49 uncommons.
