The variants are what turn the Sun & Moon master set from a 172-card checklist into 296 slots, about 1.7 slots per card. The set has an official count of 149 with 23 secret rares above it, and the English-language Pokémon TCG release of February 3, 2017 spreads its slots across three finishes: 124 reverse holo, 119 normal and 53 holo. Laid out nine to a side, the full master set fills 17 double-sided binder pages, a moderate job for a Sun & Moon era expansion.
Only three variant families make up the Sun & Moon master set: Reverse Holo with 124 slots, Normal with 119 and Holo with 53. There are no stamped or special print families to track. The reverse holo slots come from the Uncommon, Common and Rare cards, so every card in those tiers needs a second slot in the binder beyond its normal print. A reverse holo carries a holofoil pattern across the card with the artwork left unfoiled, which makes it a separate card to collect rather than a duplicate. The holo slots cover the higher rarities.
| Variant family | Slots | Priced | Share of value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reverse Holo | 124 | 124 | 11% |
| Normal | 119 | 119 | 3.5% |
| Holo | 53 | 53 | 85% |
The Sun & Moon master set cost is concentrated at the top. The ten most valuable slots hold 58 percent of the total value, while the lower-value half of the priced slots adds up to only 4 percent. By finish, holo slots hold 85 percent of the value, reverse holos 11 percent and normal prints just 3 percent. All 296 slots carry a price, as of October 24, 2026. Condition matters too: the LP and up total sits 28 percent below the Near Mint total, and the MP and up total sits 45 percent below it.

Five holo slots define the difficulty of the Sun & Moon master set: the Secret Rare Umbreon GX and Secret Rare Espeon GX lead, followed by the Ultra Rare Umbreon GX, the Ultra Rare Lillie and the Ultra Rare Espeon GX. Together these five hold 41 percent of the master set's total value. None of them is a variant slot, since each is the card's main holo print, so the cost here comes from the top-rarity cards themselves, and the Umbreon GX and Espeon GX each take two of the five places across their Secret Rare and Ultra Rare prints.
At 296 slots, the Sun & Moon master set is about equal to the Sun & Moon era median of 292, so it is an average-sized job for its era. By master set value it ranks 13th of 16 comparable sets in the era. The set before it, Evolutions, has 194 slots, and the set after it, Guardians Rising, has 287 slots. Both of their master sets hold higher value than this one, so Sun & Moon is the smaller commitment in value terms despite a middling slot count.

A Sun & Moon master set is one copy of every card AND every variant in the set — the 172 cards on this page, with their Normal, Reverse Holo and Holo prints each listed and priced on their own. Sign in and the checklist tracks what you own, in step with the Cardboard Alpha app.
The large NM-only figure is a complete catalog estimate when every printing has current NM pricing. LP, MP, HP, and DMG “and up” totals below it use the requested condition or a better available condition. These are summed reference prices, not a quote from one seller; a dash means the current market does not cover every printing yet.
“LP and up” means lightly played or better: the total uses LP when available, then NM as the better-condition fallback. The MP, HP, and DMG tiers follow the same pattern.
