Sun & Moon opens with Umbreon GX and Espeon GX at the top of its card list, and those two names set the tone for the whole expansion. Released on February 3, 2017 under the set code SUM, it is the base expansion of the Sun & Moon era and series, following Evolutions and preceding Guardians Rising. The official count is 149 cards, with 23 secret cards numbered above it, for 172 catalog printings. Water, Grass, Colorless and Psychic types carry most of the set, and several GX Pokémon, including Espeon GX, Lapras GX, Lunala GX and Lurantis GX, appear in three versions each.
The Sun & Moon card list climbs from commons, uncommons and rares up to 23 Ultra Rares and 14 Secret Rares, 37 chase-tier cards in all, and the secret cards are numbered past the printed 149. The most valuable cards are Umbreon GX as a Secret Rare, then Umbreon GX as an Ultra Rare, followed by Espeon GX as a Secret Rare and Lillie as an Ultra Rare. 5ban Graphics illustrated most of the top cards, and Megumi Mizutani drew Lillie. The top five cards hold 48 percent of the set's total card value, so a large share of the worth sits in a few pulls.
As of October 2026, Sun & Moon ranks 13th by total card value among the 16 comparable Sun & Moon era sets, about 0.4 times the era median, and 108th across all 130 comparable sets in the game. Its most valuable single card ranks 12th in the era, while its trading activity ranks 9th. At 149 printed cards it is about the same size as the era median of 148. Evolutions before it and Guardians Rising after it both hold more total value. Its cards first appeared in Japan in smA: Sun & Moon Starter Set and SM1S: Collection Sun, both released December 9, 2016.
