Release date, card count, chase cards and how it compares with the WOTC era.
Neo Genesis is an expansion from the WOTC era and the opening release of the Neo series in the English-language Pokémon TCG, issued under set code N1 on December 16, 2000. It is built to a compact structure: 111 cards, all of them in the official count, with no secret cards above it. The set leans on Grass, Water, Colorless and Lightning Pokémon, and it is defined by the Johto starters, with Chikorita, Cyndaquil and Croconaw among the names printed in more than one version, alongside Lugia as its headline card.
Neo Genesis has a simple pull ladder of commons, uncommons and rares, and 19 of its cards sit in the chase tier, all of them rares, with nothing numbered beyond the printed 111. Lugia, illustrated by Hironobu Yoshida, is the most valuable card in the set, followed by Heracross, Meganium, Pichu and Feraligatr, all rares by Ken Sugimori. The top five cards hold 40 percent of the set's total card value, which is a meaningful concentration but leaves a fair share of the value spread through the rest of the rare slots.
Neo Genesis was released December 16, 2000.

It followed Gym Challenge, which holds higher total value, and came before Neo Discovery, which holds similar value. Its cards first appeared in Japan in Gold, Silver, to a New World..., released on February 4, 2000.

The Neo Genesis card list runs to 111 printings, and all 111 are priced. Because the top five cards account for 40 percent of total value, the cost of a complete set depends heavily on a handful of rares, while the commons and uncommons make up the bulk of the checklist at modest weight. The sealed line covers six products, spanning booster boxes, booster packs and decks, which suits collectors who prefer to open product rather than buy singles.
