Gym Challenge sits in the WOTC era as the second half of the Gym series, an expansion released on October 16, 2000 under the set code G2. It follows Gym Heroes and carries 132 cards, the same size as that predecessor. The set is built around the Kanto gym leaders and their rivals, and it prints several of them twice: Blaine, Giovanni, Giovanni's Meowth, Koga and Koga's Koffing each appear in two versions. Its Pokémon lean on Grass, Colorless, Psychic and Water types, and its headline cards are Blaine's Charizard, Erika's Venusaur and Rocket's Mewtwo.
The Gym Challenge card list climbs from 49 commons and 42 uncommons through 21 rares to 20 Holo Rare cards, which form the whole chase tier, and nothing sits above the printed 132. Blaine's Charizard leads the most valuable cards, followed by Erika's Venusaur, Rocket's Mewtwo and Misty's Gyarados, all Holo Rares. Ken Sugimori illustrated the first, second and fourth of those and most of the set, 100 cards in all. The top five cards hold 40 percent of the set's total card value, a meaningful concentration but one that leaves real weight in the holos below them.
As of October 2026, Gym Challenge holds the 5th highest total card value among the 16 comparable WOTC sets and 16th across the whole game, at about 1.6 times the era median. Its single most valuable card ranks 9th in the era and its trading activity ranks 7th. At 132 printed cards it runs larger than the era median of 108. It followed Gym Heroes, which holds less total value, and came before Neo Genesis, which also holds less. Its cards first appeared in Japan in Challenge from the Darkness, released June 25, 1998.

A complete Gym Challenge run is 132 printings, and all 132 are priced. Because the top five cards carry 40 percent of the set's total card value, the cost of finishing it is driven by a handful of Holo Rares, led by Blaine's Charizard, while the commons, uncommons and plain rares fill out the rest. Sealed product is listed as well: eight products in all, spanning decks, booster boxes and booster packs.
