The cost of the Gym Challenge master set is concentrated in a small corner of a 268-slot job. The set holds 132 cards, and the master set averages 2 slots per card, split into 226 normal slots and 42 holo slots. Laid out nine to a side, the full run fills 15 double-sided binder pages. That is a sizeable master set checklist for a WOTC era release, and Gym Challenge, part of the English-language Pokémon TCG, came out on October 16, 2000.
Most of the Gym Challenge master set comes from two print runs: Normal 1st Edition and Normal Unlimited at 112 slots each, with the holo cards repeated the same way as Holo 1st Edition and Holo Unlimited at 20 slots each. A 1st Edition print carries the 1st Edition stamp and an Unlimited print does not, so every card needs a slot for each. The remaining slots are one-offs: a Holo Energy Symbol Error, a Holo Jumbo Winner, a Normal Text Error and a Normal Wotc print. Those four are single slots, but each is its own space in the binder.
| Variant family | Slots | Priced | Share of value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal 1st Edition | 112 | 112 | 18% |
| Normal Unlimited | 112 | 112 | 7.0% |
| Holo 1st Edition | 20 | 20 | 50% |
| Holo Unlimited | 20 | 20 | 24% |
| Holo Unlimited Energy Symbol Error | 1 | 0 | — |
| Holo Unlimited Jumbo Winner | 1 | 1 | 1.8% |
| Normal Unlimited Text Error | 1 | 0 | — |
| Normal Unlimited Wotc | 1 | 0 | — |
As of October 24, 2026, 263 of the 268 slots in the Gym Challenge master set carry a price. The master set cost leans heavily on the top end: the ten most valuable slots hold 40 percent of the total value, while the lower-value half of the priced slots adds up to only 5 percent. By finish, holo slots account for 72 percent of the value and normal slots for 28, even though normal slots far outnumber holos. Condition matters too, since an LP and up master set totals 15 percent below the Near Mint figure and an MP and up set sits 18 percent below it.

Four of the five hardest slots in the Gym Challenge master set are holos, and one is a surprise. Blaine's Charizard in Holo 1st Edition ranks first by value, followed by Erika's Venusaur in Holo 1st Edition. Blaine's Charizard in Holo Unlimited takes third, then Sabrina's Gengar, a Rare, in Normal 1st Edition, a variant slot of a card that is not even a holo. Rocket's Mewtwo in Holo Unlimited rounds out the five. Together these slots hold 24 percent of the master set's total value, and three of them are variants rather than a card's main print.
At 268 slots, the Gym Challenge master set is about 1.2 times the era median of 226 slots, so it is a larger job than most WOTC sets. By master set value it ranks 5th among the 16 comparable sets of its era. Its neighbours in the release order are close in size but lower in value: Gym Heroes, the previous set, has 267 slots and a master set holding lower value, and Neo Genesis, the next set, has 225 slots and also holds lower value.

A Gym Challenge master set is one copy of every card AND every variant in the set — the 132 cards on this page, with their Normal, Reverse Holo and Holo prints each listed and priced on their own. Sign in and the checklist tracks what you own, in step with the Cardboard Alpha app.
The large NM-only figure is a complete catalog estimate when every printing has current NM pricing. LP, MP, HP, and DMG “and up” totals below it use the requested condition or a better available condition. These are summed reference prices, not a quote from one seller; a dash means the current market does not cover every printing yet.
“LP and up” means lightly played or better: the total uses LP when available, then NM as the better-condition fallback. The MP, HP, and DMG tiers follow the same pattern.
