Release date, card count, chase cards and how it compares with the EX era.
Gengar ex, Charizard ex and Venusaur ex headline FireRed & LeafGreen, the English-language Pokémon TCG expansion that closed out the EX era's run of Kanto-flavored releases. It launched on September 1, 2004 under set code RG with 112 official cards plus 4 secret cards, for 116 printings in all. The set leans on Colorless, Grass, Water and Psychic types, and it is built around the original starters: Charmander appears three times, with Bulbasaur, Squirtle and Mr. Mime ex each printed twice across the card list.
The FireRed & LeafGreen pull structure is plain: common, uncommon and rare, with 4 secret cards numbered above the printed 112. The most valuable cards are all ex Pokémon at the rare tier, led by Gengar ex, then Charizard ex, Venusaur ex and Blastoise ex. Ryo Ueda illustrated Venusaur ex and is the set's second most prolific artist after Ken Sugimori. Value is concentrated, with the top five cards holding 63 percent of the set's total card value, so the chase cards are the starter ex cards and a few other big names, not the deep bulk.
FireRed & LeafGreen was released September 1, 2004.
FireRed & LeafGreen has 116 cards.
FireRed & LeafGreen is part of the EX era.

Hidden Legends came before it and holds less total value, while Team Rocket Returns followed and holds more. Its cards first appeared in Japan in Flight of Legends and in the Venusaur, Charizard and Blastoise starter decks.

A complete FireRed & LeafGreen run is 116 printings, all of them priced. Because the top five cards carry 63 percent of total card value, the cost of finishing the set rests mostly on the ex cards, while the many commons and uncommons add comparatively little. Sealed product for the set covers 4 items: a booster box, booster packs, a blister and a deck, which gives collectors several ways to approach the card list. The release date of September 1, 2004 puts these among the older EX-era sealed products, so condition matters.
