How to Build a Master Set: Strategy and Cost
A master set is one copy of every card in a set plus whichever variants a collector counts, and on Cardboard Alpha's October 20, 2026 evaluated prices the main prints cost $252.34 in Crown Zenith, $1,086.77 in Surging Sparks, $1,620.24 in 151 and $3,942.09 in Prismatic Evolutions.

A Pokémon master set is one copy of every card in a set, a list that can be extended to every print variant of those cards. Its cost depends on that list and on a handful of chase cards more than on the card count: on Cardboard Alpha's evaluated prices for October 20, 2026, one raw Near Mint copy of every main print cost $252.34 in Crown Zenith, $1,086.77 in Surging Sparks, $1,620.24 in 151 and $3,942.09 in Prismatic Evolutions.
The build order that follows is to fix the list, price the five most expensive cards, then fill the cheap layer. In each set the five priciest cards held 35.7 to 56.9 percent of the total, while 64 to 77 percent of the cards cost under $1.00.
What a master set includes
TCGplayer's collecting guide describes a master set as a binder of every card in a given set. PSA's Set Registry, which only accepts PSA-graded cards, separates a basic set, where a slot accepts a card with or without variations, from a master set, which requires a specific card for each slot, variation or not.
Collectors do not agree on the edges. In an Elite Fourum thread opened in November 2019, one poster called a master set everything found in a set's booster packs, and another added every print variation of those cards.
A June 2026 reply to the same thread put reverse holos in a complete set and reserved master set for a longer list that adds promos, retailer exclusives and set-stamped cards. These are individual opinions on a community forum, anecdotal rather than a standard.
Cardboard Alpha leaves the choice to each collector. Its master-set checklists count every catalog variant by default, and an account setting, Master set includes, switches classes off: Holo, Reverse holo, Poké Ball & Master Ball patterns, 1st Edition, Shadowless, Stamped & promo, and Other rare variants. Each card always keeps its base print.
