Release date, card count, chase cards and how it compares with the EX era.
Sandstorm opens with Raichu ex, Gardevoir ex and Typhlosion ex at the head of its card list, which makes it a set where the ex cards set the tone. It is an expansion in the EX series of the English-language Pokémon TCG, released on September 18, 2003 under the set code SS. The checklist runs to 100 cards, and the same 100 printings make up the full catalog. Grass, Water, Colorless and Psychic Pokémon carry most of the set, and Anorith, Cacnea, Duskull, Lileep and Lombre each appear in two versions.
The Sandstorm pull ladder is short: 33 commons and 33 uncommons form the base, with 20 rares and 14 holo rares above them, and no secret cards beyond the printed count. The value sits in the ex cards, which are printed at plain Rare. Raichu ex leads the most valuable cards, followed by Gardevoir ex, Typhlosion ex and Aerodactyl ex, with Kabutops ex fifth. Ryo Ueda illustrated Raichu ex and Kabutops ex, and Hikaru Koike drew the next three. The top five cards hold 47 percent of the set's total card value, so roughly half the worth of a complete set rides on those five.
Sandstorm was released September 18, 2003.

As of October 2026, Sandstorm ranks 15th by total card value among the 16 comparable EX sets, at about 0.5 times the era median, and 54th across the 130 sets in the game. Its most valuable card, Raichu ex, also ranks 15th in the era, while trading activity places it 11th. At 100 printed cards it sits about level with the era median of 107. It followed Ruby & Sapphire, which holds similar total value, and came before Dragon, which holds more. Its cards first appeared in Japanese in Miracle of the Desert, released April 18, 2003, which shares 52 cards with it.

A complete Sandstorm run is 100 printings, and all 100 are priced. With 47 percent of the value packed into five ex cards, the cost of finishing the set is driven by those few, while the rest of the checklist is comparatively modest. The sealed lineup totals 3 products: a booster box, a booster pack and a deck. Anyone building the set card by card will find the common and uncommon slots straightforward, with the rares and holo rares marking the real hurdles.
