Release date, card count, chase cards and how it compares with the WOTC era.
Neo Genesis is an expansion from the WOTC era and the opening release of the Neo series, released on December 16, 2000 under the set code N1. It carries 111 cards, with no secret cards above the official count, and the numbering is straightforward. Its identity comes from the Johto starters, since Chikorita, Cyndaquil and Croconaw each appear in two versions, alongside the Bayleef and Feraligatr lines. Lugia and Typhlosion head the card list, and the Pokémon types lean on Grass, Water, Colorless and Lightning.
The Neo Genesis chase cards sit entirely in the Rare tier, which holds 35 cards and gives the set 19 chase-tier cards, with commons and uncommons making up the rest of the 111. Lugia is the most valuable card, illustrated by Hironobu Yoshida, followed by two different Typhlosion prints, one by Ken Sugimori and one by Shin-ichi Yoshida, and then Heracross and Feraligatr. Ken Sugimori illustrated 50 of the set's cards, far more than anyone else. The top five cards hold 56 percent of the set's total card value, so most of the worth in the card list rides on a few Rares.

Completing Neo Genesis means tracking down 111 catalog printings, and all 111 are priced. Because the top five cards carry 56 percent of the set's total card value, the cost of a complete set is driven mostly by a handful of Rares, while the commons and uncommons add comparatively little. Sealed product is also listed for the set, six items in all, covering booster boxes, booster packs and decks.
