Release date, card count, chase cards and how it compares with the WOTC era.
Gym Heroes sits in the WOTC era as a Gym series expansion, released on August 14, 2000 under the set code G1. It carries 132 cards, all of them printed in the official count, and it is built around gym leaders and their Pokémon rather than the Kanto species alone. Brock, Blaine's Growlithe, Brock's Geodude, Brock's Mankey and Brock's Onix each appear in more than one printing, which shows how the set splits its cast across versions. Grass, Water, Fighting and Colorless Pokémon make up its elemental lean, with trainers and Rocket-aligned cards mixed in.
The pull ladder in Gym Heroes runs from 48 commons and 42 uncommons through 23 rares to 19 holo rares, and every card sits inside the printed 132 with no secret cards above it. Sabrina's Gengar is the most valuable card, a Holo Rare, followed by Erika's Dragonair, Rocket's Moltres, Misty and Lt. Surge's Fearow, all holo rares as well. Ken Sugimori illustrated Sabrina's Gengar, Rocket's Moltres, Misty and Lt. Surge's Fearow, and Atsuko Nishida illustrated Erika's Dragonair. The top five cards hold 35 percent of the set's total card value, a moderate concentration for a vintage expansion.
