Release date, card count, chase cards and how it compares with the Diamond & Pearl era.
Great Encounters is an expansion in the English-language Pokémon TCG's Diamond & Pearl era and series, released on February 1, 2008 under the set code GE. It is a compact release of 106 cards, with 106 printings in the catalog. The set is built around the legendary trio of Darkrai, Dialga and Palkia, with Darkrai printed three times and Cresselia, Dialga and Palkia each printed twice across different rarities. Its Pokémon lean on Water, Colorless, Grass and Psychic types, and its top cards are mostly Rare Holo LV.X versions of those headline Pokémon.
The Great Encounters card list climbs from commons and uncommons through rares and Rare Holo cards to a four-card top tier of Rare Holo LV.X, with no secret cards above the printed 106. Darkrai in Rare Holo LV.X leads the most valuable cards, illustrated by Shizurow, followed by the Palkia and Dialga LV.X cards, both by Ryo Ueda, then the Rare Holo Rotom by Daisuke Ito. Cresselia LV.X fills fifth. Value is concentrated: the top five cards hold 61 percent of the set's total card value, so the chase cards matter far more than the rest of the card list.

Its cards first appeared in Japanese in Moonlit Pursuit and Dawn Dash, both released October 26, 2007.

Completing Great Encounters means tracking down 106 catalog printings, all of them priced. Because the top five cards carry 61 percent of the set's total card value, the cost of a complete run is driven by a handful of Rare Holo LV.X pulls and the Rare Holo cards behind them, while the commons and uncommons are a small part of the total. The sealed line includes two products: a booster box and a booster pack.
