Great Encounters arrived on February 1, 2008, an expansion in the Diamond & Pearl era of the English-language Pokémon TCG, carrying the set code GE. It runs to 106 cards, all of them inside the official count. The set is built around the Sinnoh region's headline Pokémon, with Darkrai printed three times and Cresselia, Dialga and Palkia each appearing twice across different rarities. Its top cards are the LV.X versions of Darkrai, Palkia and Dialga, and the card list leans on Water, Colorless, Grass and Psychic types.
The pull ladder in Great Encounters climbs from commons and uncommons through rares and holo rares to just four chase-tier cards, all Rare Holo LV.X, with nothing numbered above the printed count. The Darkrai LV.X illustrated by Shizurow is the most valuable card in the set, followed by Palkia LV.X and Dialga LV.X, both illustrated by Ryo Ueda, and the Rotom holo by Daisuke Ito. Cresselia LV.X also sits in the top five. Those top five cards hold 60 percent of the set's total card value, so the most valuable cards here are a short, clearly defined list.
As of October 2026, Great Encounters holds the 9th highest total card value among the 11 comparable Diamond & Pearl sets, about 0.6 times the era median, and its top card also ranks 9th in the era. Across the whole game it ranks 82nd of 130 by total card value, though it is 5th in the era for trading activity. At 106 cards it is smaller than the era median of 123. It followed Secret Wonders, which holds more total value, and came before Majestic Dawn, which also holds more. Its cards first appeared in Japan in DP4: Moonlit Pursuit and DP4: Dawn Dash, both released October 26, 2007.

The full card list for Great Encounters is 106 printings, and all 106 are priced. Because 60 percent of the value sits in the top five cards, the cost of a complete set depends mostly on the Darkrai, Palkia, Dialga and Cresselia LV.X cards, while the commons, uncommons and plain rares fill out the run cheaply by comparison. The sealed line for the set is small, a booster box and a booster pack, which makes the booster box the main sealed product for the release.
