Release date, card count, chase cards and how it compares with the WOTC era.
Expedition Base Set is built around Dragonite, Charizard and Gengar, the three most valuable cards in a 165-card expansion from the WOTC era's E-Card series, released on September 15, 2002 under the set code EX. The English-language Pokémon TCG release reworks the original Base Set line-up for the e-Reader age, and Blastoise, Charizard, Feraligatr, Meganium and Typhlosion each appear in three printings. Its cards lean on Water, Grass, Fire and Colorless Pokémon, a spread that reflects both the classic starters and the Johto generation.
The pull ladder in Expedition Base Set runs from commons and uncommons through rares to 32 Holo Rare cards, the only chase tier, with no secret cards above the printed 165. Dragonite leads the most valuable cards, illustrated by Kagemaru Himeno, ahead of Hiromichi Sugiyama's Charizard, Yukiko Baba's Gengar and Hajime Kusajima's Mew. The top five cards hold 33 percent of the set's total card value, so value is spread across the holo slots rather than locked in a single pull.
