Release date, card count, chase cards and how it compares with the WOTC era.
Expedition Base Set is the English-language Pokémon TCG expansion that opened the E-Card series, released on September 15, 2002 with set code EX. It is a 165-card run, and its headline cards are Dragonite, Charizard, Gengar, Mew and Mewtwo, all Holo Rares. Blastoise, Charizard, Feraligatr, Meganium and Typhlosion each appear in three versions, which gives the release a strong starter-evolution identity. Water, Grass, Fire and Colorless are the types it leans on. It sits in the WOTC era and works as a card list that reprints the old classics alongside Johto names.
The pull ladder in Expedition Base Set runs from Commons and Uncommons through Rares up to 32 Holo Rares, and every chase card sits in that top tier with no secret cards above the printed 165. Dragonite leads the most valuable cards, illustrated by Kagemaru Himeno, followed by Charizard, Gengar and Mew, with Mewtwo close behind. The top five cards hold 33 percent of the set's total card value, so the value is spread across the Holo Rare slot rather than packed into one or two cards.

Its Dragonite ranks 5th among the era's single most valuable cards, and it places 4th for trading activity. At 165 cards it runs larger than the era median of 108. It followed Legendary Collection, which holds less total value, and came before Aquapolis, which holds more. Its cards first appeared in Japan in Base Expansion Pack, released December 1, 2001, which shares 124 cards with it.

A complete Expedition Base Set means finding all 165 catalog printings, and every one is priced. Because the top five cards carry 33 percent of the total value, the cost of a full run depends heavily on the Holo Rare tier, while the 55 Commons and 38 Uncommons fill out the list cheaply by comparison. The sealed line is small, three products in all: two decks and a booster pack. Collectors working the card list should also watch the three versions each of Blastoise, Charizard, Feraligatr, Meganium and Typhlosion.
