Dragon Selection sits in the Black & White era of the Japanese Pokémon TCG, a small expansion released on January 27, 2012 between BW4: Dark Rush and BW5: Dragon Blast. Its set code is DS and the card list runs to 20 printings. The set is built around dragon-themed Pokémon and their evolution lines, which is why Axew, Dragonair, Dratini and Fraxure each appear twice. Headline cards in the set include Dragonite, Rayquaza and Latias, so the release reads as a compact showcase of familiar dragons rather than a broad mainline expansion.
The chase in Dragon Selection is narrow and top-heavy, with Dragonite ranked first by value, followed by Rayquaza, Latias and Salamence, and Latios close behind in fifth. Beyond those, the duplicated Dratini and Axew printings round out the upper end of the card list. Value is concentrated: the top five cards alone account for 51 percent of the set's total card value, so most of what makes the set worth chasing sits in a handful of cards, and the remaining printings carry comparatively little weight.
As of October 2026, Dragon Selection ranks 18th of the 18 comparable Black & White sets by total card value, at about 0.5 times the era median, and 186th of 189 across the whole game. Its most valuable card also ranks 18th in the era, though trading activity is stronger, placing 3rd among its era peers. It follows BW4: Dark Rush, which holds more total value, and precedes BW5: Dragon Blast, which also holds more. The same 20 cards reached English players in Dragon Vault, released October 5, 2012, 8 months after the Japanese original.

Dragon Selection is a short run of 20 catalog printings, with 19 of them priced in the market data. The full run is small, but its cost is lopsided: the top five cards hold 51 percent of the set's total card value, so the dragons at the top, led by Dragonite and Rayquaza, account for much of what a complete Dragon Selection costs, while the remaining printings sit well below them. With only a handful of cards doing the heavy lifting, the rest of the card list fills in quickly by comparison.
