Release date, card count, chase cards and how it compares with the Sword & Shield era.
The release date for the English-language Pokémon TCG's Sword & Shield base expansion is February 7, 2020, and it opened the Sword & Shield era under the same name. Its set code is SSH, and it lists 202 official cards with 14 secret cards numbered above that count, for 216 catalog printings. The card list leans on Fighting, Water, Grass and Colorless Pokémon, and several names appear in three versions: Bede, Cinderace, Marnie, Professor's Research (Professor Magnolia) and Team Yell Grunt. Snorlax VMAX heads the most valuable cards, which fits a set built around the first V and VMAX Pokémon.
Sword & Shield tops out in a chase tier of 53 cards, made up of Holo Rare V, Ultra Rare, Secret Rare and Holo Rare VMAX cards, while the 14 secret cards sit above the printed 202. The most valuable cards are the Secret Rare Snorlax VMAX, the Holo Rare VMAX Snorlax VMAX, the Ultra Rare Marnie and the Ultra Rare Snorlax V, with Morpeko VMAX close behind. Three of those four belong to illustrator aky CG Works, and kirisAki illustrated Marnie. The top five cards hold 47 percent of the set's total card value, so a large share of the worth sits in a few cards.

Finishing the full run means tracking down all 216 catalog printings, and every one of them is priced. With 47 percent of total card value concentrated in the top five cards, the cost of a complete set depends mostly on a few Snorlax, Marnie and VMAX cards, while the commons, uncommons and plain rares make up most of the checklist for little. The sealed line is broad at 43 products, mainly tins and blisters, along with Elite Trainer Boxes, decks, booster packs, a booster box and displays.
