Release date, card count, chase cards and how it compares with the EX era.
Ruby & Sapphire arrived on July 1, 2003 as the English-language Pokémon TCG's opening expansion of the EX era, carrying the set code RS and 109 cards. It is a compact, traditional run of commons, uncommons, rares and holo rares, with no secret cards above the printed count. The Pokémon types lean on Grass, Water, Colorless and Fighting, and Aron, Electrike, Makuhita, Poochyena and Ralts each appear in three versions. The headline cards are the ex Pokémon, led by Mewtwo ex, Scyther ex and Lapras ex, alongside holo rares such as Blaziken and Gardevoir.
The Ruby & Sapphire card list has no secret tier. Its ladder runs from commons and uncommons through rares to 14 holo rares, and the most valuable cards are mostly rares because the ex Pokémon sit at that rarity. Mewtwo ex ranks first by value, followed by Scyther ex, Lapras ex and Hitmonchan ex, with Blaziken the highest holo rare at fifth. Their illustrators include Katsura Tabata, Ryo Ueda and Hikaru Koike. The top five cards hold 55 percent of the set's total card value, so the chase cards here carry more than half of what a complete set is worth.
Ruby & Sapphire was released July 1, 2003.
Ruby & Sapphire has 109 cards.
Ruby & Sapphire is part of the EX era.
As of October 2026, Ruby & Sapphire ranks 16th of the 16 comparable EX sets by total card value, at about 0.4 times the era median, and 60th among the 130 sets across the game. Its top card ranks 12th in the era, yet trading activity ranks 2nd. At 109 printed cards it is about the same size as the era median of 107. It followed Skyridge, which holds more total value, and came before Sandstorm, which holds similar value. Its cards first appeared in Japan in ADV Expansion Pack, released January 31, 2003, which shares 54 cards with it.
Written from market data as of October 23, 2026; the tables update live.
A full run of Ruby & Sapphire is 109 printings, all 109 of them priced. Because the top five cards hold 55 percent of total card value, the cost of a complete set depends mostly on the ex Pokémon and a few holo rares, while the 40 commons and 34 uncommons make up the easy bulk. The 21 rares include several of the set's most valuable cards, so they deserve checking first. Sealed product for the set includes a booster box, booster packs and blister packs, so the card list can be pursued from singles or from product.
