Release date, card count, chase cards and how it compares with the EX era.
Ruby & Sapphire was released on July 1, 2003 as the expansion that opened the EX era of the English-language Pokémon TCG, carrying the set code RS. The release date matters because it marks the move into the Hoenn generation, and the card list reflects that: Aron, Electrike, Makuhita, Poochyena and Ralts each appear in three versions. The 109-card set leans on Grass, Water, Colorless and Fighting types, and its headline cards are the Pokémon-ex entries, with Mewtwo ex, Scyther ex and Lapras ex leading the value list.
The rarity structure in Ruby & Sapphire is shallow: 40 commons, 34 uncommons, 21 rares and 14 holo rares, with no secret cards above the printed 109. The chase sits in the Rare slot, where the ex cards live. Mewtwo ex, illustrated by Katsura Tabata, ranks first by value, followed by Ryo Ueda's Scyther ex, Hikaru Koike's Lapras ex and Hiromichi Sugiyama's Hitmonchan ex. Ken Sugimori's Gardevoir is the top holo rare at 5th. The top five cards hold 55 percent of the set's total card value, so most of the worth in the most valuable cards is concentrated in a handful of names.

Ruby & Sapphire has 109 cards.
Ruby & Sapphire is part of the EX era.
As of October 2026, Ruby & Sapphire ranks 16th of 16 comparable EX sets by total card value, at about 0.4 times the era median, and 60th across the 130 sets in the game. Its top card ranks 12th in the era, yet it holds 2nd for trading activity among those sets. At 109 printed cards it is about the same size as the era median of 107. It followed Skyridge, which holds more total value, and came before Sandstorm, which holds similar value. Fifty-four of its cards first appeared in the Japanese ADV Expansion Pack, released January 31, 2003.

A complete Ruby & Sapphire run covers 109 printings, and all 109 are priced, which makes the cost of finishing easy to read. Because the top five cards carry 55 percent of the set's card value, the ex Rares set the cost of completion while the commons, uncommons and most holos stay modest. The sealed line has three products: a booster box, booster packs and a blister, so the original release can be approached both as singles and as sealed product.
