Release date, card count, chase cards and how it compares with the XY era.
Evolutions arrived on November 2, 2016, as an expansion in the XY era and series, carrying the set code EVO. It holds 108 official cards with 5 secret cards numbered above that count, for 113 printings in all. The release is a retrospective one, built from material that first appeared in the Japanese 20th Anniversary expansion pack. Its card list leans on Water, Colorless, Fire and Psychic Pokémon, and it gives several versions to names such as M Charizard EX, M Blastoise EX, M Pidgeot EX, Dragonite EX and Brock's Grit, with M Charizard EX leading the headline cards.
The Evolutions pull ladder runs from commons and uncommons through rares to 25 Ultra Rares and 5 Secret Rares, 30 chase-tier cards in all, with the secrets numbered past the printed 108. M Charizard EX in Ultra Rare form is the most valuable card, followed by the rare Charizard, M Blastoise EX, Dragonite EX and Mewtwo EX. Several of the leading Ultra Rares are illustrated by 5ban Graphics, and the Charizard is by Mitsuhiro Arita. The top five cards hold 49 percent of the set's total card value, so roughly half the value sits in a handful of cards.

It followed Steam Siege and came before Sun & Moon, and both hold less total value. Its cards first appeared in the Japanese set CP6: Expansion Pack 20th Anniversary, released September 16, 2016.

The Evolutions card list totals 113 printings, and all 113 are priced. Because almost half the total card value sits in the top five cards, the cost of a complete set depends mostly on those few Charizard, Blastoise, Dragonite and Mewtwo cards, while the bulk of the list is inexpensive by comparison. The sealed line is broad at 34 products, built around a booster box and booster case alongside booster packs, Elite Trainer Boxes, Premium Collections, blisters and decks.
